Mmesoma, whose name signifies Goodness or Good works in the Igbo dialect, has recently gained notoriety among Nigerians for all the wrong reasons. Despite hailing from a humble background in Anambra State, her fraudulent actions following the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB) examination have brought her into the spotlight.
Initially, Mmesoma claimed to have achieved an impressive score of 362 in the exam, leading many to applaud her academic prowess. In recognition of her alleged achievement, Innoson Motors, a local vehicle manufacturing company, rewarded her with a sum of N3 million. The Anambra State government also sought to validate her claims by reaching out to JAMB, but their efforts were in vain as JAMB subsequently informed the State Commissioner for Education that Mmesoma's result was fabricated.
Curiously enough, Mmesoma, who seemed unassuming, did not strike others as someone inclined to deceive JAMB. However, she became embroiled in a heated controversy once her fraudulent actions were exposed through the utilization of advanced technological measures implemented by the examination body to detect any attempts at compromising the integrity of their system. Unfortunately, Mmesoma's misguided attempt to exploit technology for personal gain was thwarted by JAMB's more sophisticated technological safeguards. Subsequent investigations revealed that her actual UTME score was 249. Although this score would have been sufficient to secure admission into the University of Lagos (UNILAG) to study Pharmacy, she would have needed outstanding performance in five core subjects and the UNILAG post-JAMB examination.
The perplexing aspect for most observers is why Mmesoma felt the need to project herself as the top student. Could she not have patiently awaited the official announcement by JAMB regarding the highest scoring candidate? In her attempt to forge a score of 362, she resorted to using an outdated template from 2021.
Interestingly, many Nigerians have shown sympathy towards Mmesoma since the incident came to light. They perceive JAMB's actions as an attempt to tarnish the aspiring young girl's reputation and deny the Igbo community another moment of pride. Despite JAMB's announcement that Miss Kamisiyochukwu Nkechinyere Umeh from Anambra State, but based in Ogun State, scored the highest mark of 360, certain Nigerians, particularly those of Igbo descent, are vehemently critical of JAMB, bordering on tribal sentiment. Some individuals on the internet have transformed what was essentially a case of fraud into a tribal conflict. In fact, a lawyer even issued a 48-hour ultimatum demanding an apology from JAMB to Mmesoma, threatening legal action. Another individual, clearly misguided, offered her a scholarship to study abroad in the United States of America, Canada, or Britain, if she disclosed her preferred destination.
One former government Minister, Oby Ezekwesili, criticized JAMB for their treatment of the young lady. She personally contacted the Registrar of JAMB, Professor Isiaq Oloyede, requesting a review of the case and advocating for an independent investigation. Although she stopped short of discrediting the government institution she once presided over as Minister of Education, her actions raised questions about the institution's credibility.
It was not until JAMB presented irrefutable evidence, including Mmesoma's actual score of 249 and records of her multiple attempts to submit the forged result via the JAMB portal, that her defenders finally relented. Furthermore, a probe panel instituted by the Anambra State Government produced a damning report confirming Mmesoma's forgery of the 362 mark and her subsequent confession to the fraudulent act.
While some of Mmesoma's supporters have issued apologies to both JAMB and the Nigerian public, many still persist in their condemnation of JAMB. Some of her most ardent defenders, however, have attempted to absolve her of blame by attributing her actions to the supposed influence of cheating and dishonesty exhibited by Nigerian leaders.
The entire Mmesoma/JAMB debacle serves as a stark reminder of the immense challenge facing President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. Nigeria finds itself deeply divided, with citizens no longer speaking or acting in unison, nor sharing common values. People are quick to take sides based on the ethnic background of the alleged victim in any given situation. These deep-rooted divisions within the nation pose a serious threat to its development and progress. How did Nigeria descend into this regrettable state?
